Heating, oxygen and basic lodges: what each type of stay is really like.
What kinds of stay
Restored courtyard houses and small boutique lodges in the old town of Lhasa. Atmospheric and close to the sights.
Modern rooms with lifts and often oxygen. Good for the first nights at altitude.
Clean, simple rooms around a courtyard. Fine for one or two nights.
Simple rooms and heated tents outside the cities, such as at Tingri, Rongbuk and Namtso.
Oxygen rooms
Oxygen-enriched rooms pump extra oxygen into the room. They are not a cure for altitude sickness, but many people sleep better in them. Ask when you book. Hotels also keep oxygen cylinders and a first-aid kit at the front desk. Our vehicles carry oxygen on the road.

Outside Lhasa
In Shigatse and Gyantse, hotels are comfortable but modest. At Tingri, Rongbuk and Namtso, accommodation is simple and nights are very cold. Bring warm layers and be ready for shared bathrooms in the highest places.
