Today, explore the historical and spiritual heart of Lhasa, from the iconic Potala Palace to Jokhang Temple and the pilgrim-filled Barkhor Street.

In the morning, visit the magnificent Potala Palace, rising above Lhasa on Marpo Ri Hill. Walk up the palace steps and explore its historic halls, chapels, murals, Buddhist statues, and stupas. Your local guide will share stories about the palace, the Dalai Lamas, and its important place in Tibetan history. Take your time on the steps, as you are still acclimatizing to the altitude.

After your visit, walk to Zongjiao Lukang Park, a popular local park at the foot of the Potala Palace. Enjoy a classic view of the palace reflected across the water and see local residents walking, exercising, dancing, and relaxing in the park.

Continue to Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Lhasa and one of Tibet’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. Explore its atmospheric halls and chapels with your guide, then step outside to watch pilgrims praying, prostrating, and following the traditional clockwise kora.

Afterward, walk along Barkhor Street, the historic pilgrimage circuit surrounding Jokhang Temple. Join the flow of pilgrims, explore the old streets and local shops, and experience the lively atmosphere of Lhasa’s old town.

In the evening, enjoy a Tibetan-style featured dinner arranged by us, a relaxing way to end your first full day in Lhasa.

There are many steps inside the palace, so walk slowly and do not rush. Photography is not permitted inside the palace. For one of the best classic views of Potala Palace, our Lhasa team recommends stopping at Zongjiao Lukang Park after your visit.

  • Driving: Approx. 12–14 km between major stops | 30–40 minutes

Today, discover a deeper side of Lhasa through Tibetan Buddhism, monastic life, and a personal visit to a local Tibetan family.

In the morning, drive about 12 km (around 35 minutes) to Drepung Monastery, one of the great Gelug monasteries of Tibet. Built along the hillside, the monastery is known for its whitewashed buildings, courtyards, prayer halls, and monastic colleges. Walk through the complex with your guide and learn about its important role in Tibetan Buddhist history and monastic education.

In the afternoon, drive about 14 km (around 40 minutes) to Sera Monastery. Explore its monastery grounds and prayer halls before heading to the debate courtyard. Here, watch the famous monks’ debate, generally held around 15:00–17:00 except Sundays. Monks debate Buddhist philosophy through questions, hand claps, and expressive gestures. Your guide will explain what these actions mean and help you better understand this centuries-old tradition.

After Sera Monastery, visit a local Tibetan family specially arranged by us. Step inside their home, meet the family, and learn about everyday Tibetan life beyond the monasteries and famous landmarks. You can also taste traditional favorites such as tsampa, butter tea, and local snacks.

After the visit, your guide and driver will escort you back to your hotel in Lhasa.

Local Expert Tips: Our Lhasa team recommends keeping Sera Monastery in the afternoon, when you have the best chance to see the monks’ debate. The debate is normally unavailable on Sundays and may be adjusted for religious events or monastery arrangements. During the family visit, feel free to ask questions about local life, but ask permission before taking close-up photos of family members.

Questions about this tour
