Risposta breve

Walk clockwise, ask before photographing, dress modestly and never touch statues or sacred objects. Your guide will tell you where cameras are allowed.

Ten rules that matter

1
Go clockwise

Walk around temples, stupas and prayer wheels in a clockwise direction, as pilgrims do.

2
Ask before photographing

Many chapels forbid photos, and some charge a fee. Never photograph monks or pilgrims without asking.

3
Dress modestly

Cover shoulders and knees. Bring a warm layer, since chapels are cold.

4
Take off hats and sunglasses

Do this when you enter a chapel.

5
Do not touch

Do not touch statues, murals, butter lamps or offerings.

6
Keep your feet down

Do not point your feet at an altar or sit with your back to a statue.

7
Speak quietly

Chapels are working places of prayer. Switch your phone to silent.

8
Give pilgrims priority

Let pilgrim queues move first, especially at the Jokhang gate.

9
Make a small offering

A small note in a donation box or a butter-lamp offering is welcome but never required.

10
Follow your guide

Ask your guide if you are unsure. Rules vary from monastery to monastery.

Visiting well

Go early in the day when the chapels are quieter and the light is soft. At Drepung and Sera, the afternoon debating courtyards are worth seeing, but photography rules apply. Respect closed areas and do not enter side rooms unless invited.

Do I need to donate?

No. A small offering is welcome, but it is your choice.

Can women enter all chapels?

Most are open. A few are restricted. Your guide will tell you.
