What you see
A wide turquoise lake sits below the Nyenchen Tanglha range, with prayer flags and pilgrims on the shore. It is one of the three holy lakes of Tibet. The views are open and bright, and the air is thin and cold.
Planning your visit
May to October. The road is closed by snow in winter.
Go after at least three days in Lhasa and Shigatse, not before.
An overnight stay at the lakeshore camp gives you sunrise and stars, but nights are very cold.
At 4,718 m this is higher than most places on the standard routes.
