Pine forests, peach blossom and a gentler altitude, about 400 km east of Lhasa.
Why go
The air is thicker, the valleys are green and the nights are warmer than anywhere else on our routes. It gives a very different view of Tibet from the high, dry plateau. Many people use it as a gentle first stop or a calm end to a trip.
What to see
Pine forest and meadows on the road from Lhasa.
A calm lake with a small monastery on an island.
Views of the Yarlung Tsangpo canyon, one of the deepest in the world.
Valleys covered in pink in March and April.
When to go
March and April bring blossom and cool days. September and October bring clear skies and golden light. Summer is warm and wet. The road from Lhasa crosses high passes on the way, so allow a full day.
