No. Los viajeros extranjeros necesitan un tour con guía autorizado y vehículo privado fuera de Lhasa. Un asiento en grupo de salida fija es la opción más económica.
De abril a octubre es la temporada principal. Mayo–junio y septiembre–octubre ofrecen las vistas más claras; julio y agosto son más verdes pero más húmedos.
El tren desde Xining o Pekín es un ascenso lento y escénico que ayuda a la aclimatación. Los vuelos desde Chengdu, Xi’an o Katmandú ahorran uno o dos días.
