The train from Xining or Beijing is a gentler climb and a great journey; flights save one to two days. Both need your permit in hand before boarding.
The train
Trains run to Lhasa station from Xining, Beijing and several other cities. The ride from Xining takes about a day and from Beijing about two. The line crosses the plateau and reaches about 5,072 m at its highest point, so oxygen is supplied in the carriages. Many travellers find the gradual rise easier than flying straight to 3,650 m.
The flight
Flights land at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, 62 km from the city centre, and your guide meets you outside arrivals. The direct flights from Chengdu, Xi’an and Kathmandu save time but take you to 3,650 m within a couple of hours, so keep the first day very easy.
You have extra days, want the landscape and would like a slower climb.
Time is short, or you are linking Tibet with Chengdu or Kathmandu.
Take the train in and fly out, or the reverse. Our rail itineraries do exactly this.
Before you board
You must have your Tibet Travel Permit before you book flights or trains. The permit is checked at boarding. Flying passengers can show a copy, while train passengers need the original, so we send it by courier. Our permit guide explains the timing in full.

Soft sleepers have four berths to a compartment and oxygen supply. Bring snacks and warm layers.
Which way should I travel?
Many people go up by train and fly out. That gives a gradual climb and a quick return.
