簡要回答

Mobile data works but many foreign apps are blocked in China, so set up an eSIM or VPN-free plan before you arrive. Cards are accepted in cities; carry some cash for villages.

Staying connected

Hotels in cities have Wi-Fi, and coverage is good on main roads. Services such as Google, WhatsApp and Instagram do not work on a normal Chinese connection. An international eSIM or a roaming plan lets you use them as you would at home. Download offline maps and a translation pack before you travel, since signal drops in remote areas.

Paying for things

1
Payment apps

The main Chinese payment apps can link to an international card. Set them up before you travel, because verification can take a day.

2
Cards

Large hotels and some shops take international cards. Smaller places often do not.

3
Cash

Carry cash for villages, monasteries and small shops. ATMs in Lhasa usually take foreign cards; outside Lhasa they are rare.

Before you fly

  • Set up an eSIM or roaming plan
  • Install your key apps and download offline maps
  • Link a card to a payment app
  • Carry some Chinese yuan in small notes

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Google Maps in Tibet?

Not reliably on a Chinese network. Download an offline map or use a roaming eSIM.

Do I need a VPN?

A roaming eSIM avoids it. If you use a VPN, install and test it before you travel.

Is it safe to use hotel Wi-Fi?

Yes for everyday use. Avoid banking over public Wi-Fi.
