By season
Warm days and cold mornings. A down jacket, fleece, gloves and a hat. Lhasa highs are 13°C in March and 21°C in May.
The warmest and the wettest time. Light layers, a rain shell and strong sun protection. Nights are still around 10°C to 11°C.
Clear days with cold nights. Add gloves and a warm hat, especially for Everest.
Cold and dry. Lows reach -9°C in January, so you will want thermals, a heavy down jacket and warm socks.
Things people forget
Bring a small day bag for monasteries, as larger bags are often not allowed inside the Potala Palace. A scarf or buff helps with dust and cold. Pack a few snacks for long drives. If you are heading to Everest Base Camp or Namtso, add warm base layers and spare socks for the cold night.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need hiking boots?
Not for most trips. Walking shoes with good grip are enough, unless you are doing a trek such as the Kailash kora.
Can I buy things in Lhasa?
Yes. Basic clothing and toiletries are easy to find, but choices are limited outside the city.
What plug do I need?
China uses 220 V, with A, C and I type sockets. A universal adapter covers it.
