View ItineraryA Chengdu Tibet tour is a 6–15 day combined itinerary starting in Sichuan’s capital and continuing to Tibet by train, flight or the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway. Most travellers spend 1–2 days in Chengdu (the panda base, Wenshu Monastery, Jinli ancient street, Sichuan opera) before the Tibet leg of 4 to 13 days, which can be a Lhasa-only block, a Lhasa+EBC route, or a multi-week overland through Mount Kailash to the Gyirong border.
Chengdu is bookable year-round. Spring (March–May) is the most pleasant for the panda base outdoor enclosures. Summer (June–August) is hot and humid; pandas sleep more in the shade. Autumn (September–November) is cool and dry. Winter is mild (5–10 °C) and the Sichuan-Tibet Highway G318 remains drivable. Plan 6 days for the quickest combined trip, 11–15 days for EBC or the full overland.
Chengdu days use a local English-speaking guide and a private vehicle. We book the panda base for the morning slot when the animals are most active (08:30 entry, before the tour buses); afternoon for Wenshu Monastery and Jinli. Sichuan-Tibet G318 overland uses Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with an experienced Tibetan-Sichuan driver who knows the 14 mountain passes and the Mila Pass approach into Lhasa.
A 6-day Chengdu + Lhasa flight tour starts from USD 1,200 per person. A 7-day Chengdu Tibet train tour USD 1,400. An 11-day Chengdu Lhasa Kathmandu overland USD 2,400. The 10-day Sichuan-Tibet G318 group tour starts from USD 2,029 per person. Flight (2 hours, multiple daily) is the fastest and cheapest. Z322 train (36 hours) is the soft entry for travellers worried about altitude. The G318 overland (10–13 days, ~2,140 km) is the most spectacular but costs the most time — recommended only for travellers who want the journey itself as the trip.
Tickets are released online up to 7 days ahead and routinely sell out for peak weekends. Tibet Daily books the morning slot (08:30 entry) the moment the window opens once your trip dates are confirmed. The base allows roughly 30,000 visitors per day; arriving on a free ticket without a reservation is no longer possible.
The G318 from Chengdu to Lhasa is 2,140 km of paved switchbacks across 14 mountain passes — most notably the 5,130 m Mila Pass east of Lhasa. The road is sealed and well-maintained but the daily driving time can hit 10 hours on switchback days. We schedule 10–13 days for the full drive with overnight stops at Kangding, Litang, Markam, Basu, Bomi and Bayi.
