Mount Everest (EBC) Tours

Drive into the 5,150 m Rongbuk amphitheatre, sleep on the only road-accessible side of the mountain

An EBC tour from the Tibet side reaches Everest Base Camp by paved road — no trek required — and sleeps at Rongbuk Monastery guesthouse at 5,150 m, the highest legal accommodation on the mountain. The view is the unobstructed north face of Everest (8,848.86 m), framed by the Rongbuk Glacier and the prayer flags above the monastery roof.

Most EBC itineraries take 7 to 9 days from Lhasa: two days for acclimatisation, a day each at Yamdrok and Shigatse, two nights to reach and leave EBC. Longer 11-day routes add Nyingchi or extend through the Gyirong border into Nepal.

What is an Everest Base Camp tour from Tibet?

A Tibet-side EBC tour is a road-based itinerary from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp on the north side of the mountain, ending one or two nights at Rongbuk Monastery (5,150 m). Unlike the Nepal-side EBC trek, which takes 12–14 days of walking from Lukla, the Tibet north-side base camp is reached entirely by paved road via the Friendship Highway (G318) — most travellers cover the Lhasa–EBC drive in two days with a Shigatse stop.

The view is the principal reason: the Tibet side gives you the wider, more vertical north face of Everest, plus an unobstructed view of Cho Oyu (8,201 m) and Makalu (8,485 m) on a clear day. The Rongbuk Glacier moraine sits 4 km from the monastery and is reached by an electric shuttle.

Days Route Best for
7 days Lhasa – Shigatse – EBC – Lhasa First-timers, time-constrained
8 days + Yamdrok Lake Most popular EBC group tour
9 days + Namtso Lake Adds the second great holy lake
11 days + Nyingchi peach valley Spring departures (April)
10–13 days Lhasa – EBC – Gyirong – Kathmandu Overland to Nepal

When to go and how long to plan

EBC has two reliable windows. Late April to early June produces clean morning skies and warm enough nights at Rongbuk (–2 °C to +5 °C). Late September to early November is drier and colder (–8 °C nights) with the sharpest mountain views and the lowest cloud cover. The monsoon shoulder (mid-July to late August) is bookable but you should expect 50% of mornings to lose the summit to cloud by 10:00.

December to mid-March remain technically open, but the Rongbuk Monastery guesthouse closes most years from late November to early March; itineraries in this window switch to a same-day visit returning to Tingri (4,300 m) for the night. The Tibet Travel Permit takes 15 working days; book 4–6 weeks ahead for May, June, September and October departures.

How we run EBC tours at Tibet Daily

Standard EBC departures use 4WD Toyota Land Cruiser Prado for groups of 2–6, and a 19-seat Yutong coach for larger groups. The Lhasa–Shigatse leg takes 6 hours via the Yamdrok Lake/Karola Glacier loop. Shigatse–EBC is a 9-hour drive across two passes (Tso La 4,500 m, Gyatso La 5,220 m). We schedule the Rongbuk arrival before 16:00 to leave a clean dusk window for north-face photography.

What we don’t do: we don’t gamble on the seasonal EBC tent camp (closed irregularly by the reserve authority — we book Rongbuk Monastery instead); we don’t promise a sunrise summit photo (it depends on weather you cannot pre-pay for); and we don’t squeeze EBC into a 5-day itinerary, because skipping the Lhasa acclimatisation block is the leading cause of evacuated AMS cases on this route.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Everest Base Camp tour cost in 2026?

From the Tibet side, an 8-day Lhasa–Yamdrok–Shigatse–EBC group tour starts from USD 926 per person, including the Tibet Travel Permit, EBC reserve ticket, Rongbuk Monastery guesthouse, 4-star Lhasa and Shigatse hotels, Tibetan-licensed guide, vehicle and driver. Private 2-pax versions of the same route start near USD 1,650 per person. Both prices exclude flights and the optional Chengdu/Xining train leg.

How high is EBC on the Tibet side and how do you sleep there?

Tibet-side Everest Base Camp sits at 5,200 m at the meadow stop, with the Rongbuk Monastery guesthouse at 5,150 m offering the closest legal accommodation. The view of Everest’s north face (8,848.86 m) is unobstructed. The monastery guesthouse is a basic stone-walled dorm or twin room with shared toilets and electric blankets; private en-suite rooms exist in Tingri (4,300 m) two hours back if you prefer.

Do I need a special Everest permit?

No separate trekking permit is required for the road-based Tibet EBC tour. The standard Tibet Travel Permit covers the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, and the reserve’s per-person ticket (CNY 320 / ~USD 45) is included in our quoted price. You do not need an Aliens’ Travel Permit unless you are continuing to Mount Kailash or Ngari.

Can I trek to EBC from the Tibet side?

Yes — a 4-day Old Tingri to EBC trek covers 70 km on the historic Mallory route, ending at base camp. We run this as a private extension on 11- or 12-day Tibet adventure tours. It is moderately strenuous (max altitude 5,200 m, daily 5–7 hours of walking) and not suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers without a 3-day Lhasa acclimatisation buffer.

What’s the difference between Tibet-side and Nepal-side EBC?

Nepal-side EBC (5,364 m) is reached by a 12–14 day round-trip trek from Lukla, sleeping in tea-house lodges. Tibet-side EBC (5,200 m) is reached in two days by paved road from Lhasa with a single overnight at Rongbuk. The Nepal side gives you Khumbu valley walking and the Sherpa village experience; the Tibet side gives you the wider north face view and reaches base camp in roughly a third of the time.

Will I see Mount Everest clearly from Rongbuk?

On a clear morning in May or October, yes — the north face dominates the southern horizon from the monastery roof. Cloud build-up usually starts after 10:00, so the dawn slot (06:00–08:00) is the strongest photographic window. Across a 2-night EBC stay during the right season, our travellers see the summit clearly on roughly 80% of mornings.

Is EBC suitable for travellers over 60 or 70?

For travellers in good cardiovascular health, yes — with the standard 8-day routing that includes two Lhasa nights and a Shigatse night before the Rongbuk arrival. Travellers over 70, with COPD, with recent cardiac events or with poorly controlled hypertension should consult a doctor; we ask for a medical clearance letter on EBC bookings for the over-70 cohort.

How do I start booking an EBC tour?

Pick a date and route from the EBC archive, send your passport and Chinese visa scans, and we lock the Permit application within 24 hours. Final permits are couriered to your Chengdu, Xining or Chongqing hotel 48 hours before your Lhasa flight or train. Total booking-to-departure window is typically 4–6 weeks.
