What is a Xining Tibet tour?
A Xining Tibet tour is a 6–10 day combined itinerary starting in Xining (Qinghai Province, 2,275 m) and continuing to Tibet on the 21-hour Qinghai–Tibet Railway. The Xining leg of 1–2 days covers Kumbum Monastery (Tibetan Buddhist Gelug school, founded 1583), Qinghai Lake (the largest saltwater lake in China at 3,196 m), and the historic Dongguan Mosque; the Tibet leg of 4 to 8 days covers Lhasa with optional EBC, Yamdrok or Namtso.
When to go and how long
Xining is best in May–October. Qinghai Lake’s bird island is most active April–July (over-wintering and breeding waterfowl). Winter is cold (–10 °C) but the rail link to Lhasa runs year-round. Plan 6 days for a quick combined trip, 8–10 days to add EBC or Namtso to the Tibet leg.
How we run Xining Tibet tours at Tibet Daily
Xining days use a local Hui or Tibetan guide who speaks the regional dialects relevant to Kumbum and the Qinghai Lake settlements. We base in central Xining 4-star hotel for one night, then move to a Qinghai Lake-side guesthouse if the lake is included. The Xining–Lhasa train (Z6801 or equivalent) departs Xining late afternoon and arrives Lhasa next-day midday — the gentlest altitude curve to the plateau.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Xining Tibet tour cost?
A 6-day Xining + Lhasa private tour starts from USD 920 per person on a 2-pax basis. A 7-day Xining + Lhasa + EBC group tour from USD 1,100. A 10-day Qinghai-Tibet Railway tour from Xining to Lhasa + EBC from USD 1,800 private 2-pax. Includes Tibet Travel Permit, Xining–Lhasa train ticket, all hotels, English-speaking guide, vehicle.
Why is Xining the cheapest railhead to Lhasa?
Two reasons: the train ticket is shorter (USD ~100 in soft sleeper vs USD ~200 from Beijing), and Xining hotels are cheaper than equivalent 4-star rooms in Beijing or Shanghai. The total per-person cost of an 8-day Xining-start trip runs roughly 25% below an 8-day Beijing-start equivalent.
Is Qinghai Lake worth a stop?
Yes for travellers with bird-watching or photography interest, especially April–July. Qinghai Lake at 3,196 m is the largest saltwater lake in China; the bird island hosts brown-headed gulls, bar-headed geese and great cormorants. The drive from Xining is 3 hours each way; we add an overnight at a lakeside guesthouse for the dawn light.
What about Kumbum Monastery?
Kumbum (Ta’er Si) is a Tibetan Buddhist Gelug monastery founded in 1583, located 25 km southwest of Xining. It is the birthplace of Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), the founder of the Gelug school, and houses one of the most important butter sculpture collections in Tibetan Buddhism. We allocate a half-day visit, usually morning before the train.
How do I book?
Send dates and Tibet route. Itinerary draft in 24 hours; Xining–Lhasa train ticket booked at China Railway’s 15-day window. Total booking-to-departure window: 4–8 weeks. Xining sleeper inventory is more available than Beijing or Shanghai equivalents.
